Master of Arts in Teaching

The Early Childhood Special Education graduate program leading to a Master of Arts in Teaching program is designed for students who have a bachelor’s degree, have completed 60 credits in liberal arts and are interested in pursuing a career in education. This program is also applicable to certified teachers looking for initial/professional certification in a different certificate area.

This program offers an integrated combination of rigorous academic study and clinically rich fieldwork focusing on the needs of all learners. The early childhood program culminates in a dual degree in regular and special education for students from birth to grade 2, particularly those in an urban environment. The childhood program culminates in a dual degree in regular and special education for students from grades 1-6, particularly those in an urban environment.  Each program offers a 12-month, full-time and part-time course of study, combining in person and online courses.

The MAT prepares candidates to be successful in obtaining New York State teacher certification as both an Early Childhood Teacher (birth-grade 2) and a Teacher of Students with Disabilities (birth-grade 2) or as a Childhood Teacher (grades 1-6) and a Teacher of Students with Disabilities (grades 1-6). Graduates will be well-positioned for employment in high needs schools within the New York City Department of Education, as well as charter and private schools, or early childhood centers.

The Childhood Urban Special Education MAT program is designed to accommodate the working professional and all courses are offered in the evening and through modules during the summer months. MAT candidates may choose to pursue the degree on a full time or part time basis. To provide additional flexibility, the program offers 9 credits of non-fieldwork classes online. Candidates enrolled in this program should plan at least 5 semesters to complete. The MAT prepares candidates to be successful in obtaining New York State teacher certification, including passing the edTPA.
